About Arabic pop
Arabic pop radio, live from Paris: Amr Diab, Fadel Chaker, Najwa Karam, Wael Kfoury and Tamer Hosny, the songs everyone knows the words to. On Wa3's Arabica channel it fills عَيْ عَيْ in the late morning and كزدورة in the afternoon, then سمرمورة and حُزن, the sad songs, at night — free in any browser.
Arabic pop took its modern shape in Cairo: in the eighties the Libyan-born Hamid El Shaeri's jeel sound set Arabic melodies over synths and drum machines, and in 1996 Amr Diab's Nour El Ein carried it across the Arab world. Lebanon answered with Ragheb Alama, Najwa Karam, Wael Kfoury and Fadel Chaker, and the crates run on through Sherine, Tamer Hosny and Hussain Al Jassmi to Saint Levant.
On Wa3's Arabica channel, عَيْ عَيْ runs from late morning into lunchtime with Tamer Hosny, AL SHAMI and Hamza Namira; كزدورة, Levantine for a drive, takes the afternoon with Amr Diab, Fadel Chaker and Najwa Karam; سمرمورة, home of Nour El Ein, opens early-week mornings and closes late nights at the end of the week; and حُزن keeps the small hours for the heartbreak songs of Hany Shaker and Hussain Aljassmi.
