About Mahraganat
Mahraganat radio, live from Paris: Cairo's electro-shaabi, loud and unfiltered — Hassan Shakosh, Omar Kamal, Hamo Bika and Ahmed El Dogary. The مهرجانات show plays it on Wa3's Arabica channel in the early evening at the weekend: the sound of Egyptian weddings and tuk-tuks, free in any browser.
Mahraganat (مهرجانات, 'festivals') grew up in the working-class neighbourhoods of Cairo in the late 2000s: shaabi melodies sped up over drum machines, keyboards and heavy Auto-Tune, made on home computers and spread at street weddings, in tuk-tuks and from phone to phone. Hassan Shakosh and Omar Kamal's Bent El Geran made it impossible to ignore in 2020; Hamo Bika, Ahmed El Dogary and G. Oka are in the crate too.
On Wa3 the genre has its own show, مهرجانات, on the Arabica channel with Suki — early evening at the weekend, Paris time, the hour for getting ready to go out. The crate leans on حمو المرشدي, with Hamo Bika's Wada3 Ya Donia, Reda El Bahrawy's El Nemr, and Ali Samara and Ahmed Ezzat's Ayem Fe Bahr El Ghadr beside him.
